Radio Broadcasters

Recorded Music NZ grants non-exclusive licences to broadcast sound recordings that are covered by our members’ repertoire in the New Zealand territory.

Commercial Radio Broadcasters

The annual licence fee for commercial radio broadcasters with annual revenue over $5M and using more than 20% of broadcast time for sound recordings is 3% of gross advertising revenue and 0.75% for stations using less than 20% music for total broadcast time – for instance, talkback stations.

Independent Commercial Radio Broadcasters

The annual licence fee for independent commercial radio broadcasters with annual revenue less than $5M is 2.35% of gross revenue.

Community Radio – National, Access, Student & Iwi Stations

The annual licence fee for community radio broadcasters is 0.9%-1.2% of gross funding revenue.

The annual licence fee for student radio broadcasters is 1.8% of gross revenue.

Low Power FM Radio Broadcasters

Any sole trader or business operating a Low Power FM Station which adheres to General User Licence Regulations and whose gross revenue is less than $10,000 per annum, can apply for a Low Power FM licence from OneMusic.

Television Broadcasters

All licensed television broadcasters have individual agreements with Recorded Music NZ, and rates may vary depending on a number of factors specific to individual broadcasters and their differing business operations.

Community Webcast

Recorded Music NZ’s Webcast Licence is a 1 year renewable licence for an individual or business having non-interactive webcast activities and an annual revenue of less than $15,000 per annum.

The annual licence fee is $260.00 (excl GST) and the following terms apply:

  • The webcast service is music and/or music videos communicated without interactive controls to users and no permanent or temporary file is retained by the user.
  • Effective technologies must be installed which prevent stream ripping/copying.
  • Metadata that identifies tracks and artists to be communicated alongside transmission (but nor prior to transmission).

This licence is available for webcasters based in New Zealand, with users who are also based in New Zealand.
