Radio stations must obtain a licence to broadcast, to communicate via their websites and to simulcast recorded music to a New Zealand audience.

Gross advertising Revenue Over $5M

We offer a licensing scheme for commercial radio broadcasters with annual gross advertising revenue over $5M. The rate varies depending on the amount of sound recordings broadcast by the station as a percentage of their total on-air time.

More than 20% of broadcast using sound recordings 3% of gross advertising revenue + GST per annum
Less than 20% of broadcast using sound recordings 0.75% of gross advertising revenue + GST per annum

Community Radio – Public, Access, Student & Iwi Stations
Licences pursuant to a licensing scheme are available for other radio broadcasters and vary depending on the type of station and service provided. The royalty rate for these stations ranges between 0.9% of gross funding income to 1.8% of gross advertising revenue.

Low Power FM Radio Broadcasters
The Low Power FM licence is for non-commercial stations adhering to the General User Licence Regulations and operating on a non-commercial basis, using advertising for cost recovery purposes only. The licence allows for limited revenue collection by the broadcaster of up to $10,000 per year.
